Counsel to Meridian Behavioral Health Systems in Acquisition of Highland Hospital

Bob Coffield, Caleb Knight and Marc Rigsby worked in conjunction with Meridian Behavioral Health Systems’ Nashville, Tennessee counsel, Bass Berry Sims representing Meridian in the acquisition of Highland Hospital. Highland is the largest provider of behavioral health care services in southern West Virginia. The acquisition is effective September 27, 2017.

“We are pleased to add Highland Hospital to our network of facilities,” Wes Mason, president and chief executive officer of Meridian, said. “Highland has an excellent record of service to the people of West Virginia, and Meridian looks forward to helping Highland do even more for its community.”

Highland includes the following companies:

  • Highland Hospital – A psychiatric hospital with 80 acute-care beds for adults, children and adolescents and a 24-bed psychiatric residential treatment facility for children and adolescents.
  • Highland Health Center – A 16-bed substance abuse treatment and detoxification program.
  • Process Strategies – An outpatient provider with integrated behavioral health care and pharmacy services.

Programs, staff and local leadership at Highland will remain in place. Meridian has assumed all liabilities for Highland’s pension fund, all of Highland’s real estate and all of Highland’s leases.

“We look forward to expanding our programs and serving the community better with high-quality behavioral health care under Meridian,” Cynthia Persily, Ph.D., chief executive officer of Highland, said. “Meridian is a recognized name in behavioral health care and provides us the best opportunity to meet our mission within the ever-changing health care landscape.”
